Skip the Motivator: Part II

The last blog I posted was about “Skip the Motivator.” As a refresher, Skip Morton taught me in high school and was the baseball coach that left a lasting impression on me and made an important contribution to my personal growth.

Recently I was at home, and received a call from an unfamiliar number. It was Dennis Buckley from Archbishop Stepinac High School, my alma mater, which was a private all-boys school. Mr. Buckley introduced himself and asked “are you the guy that wrote the blog about Mr. Morton?” I confirmed. Mr. Buckley then explained the impact of the blog and the train of occurrences that the blog initiated. As it turns out, Skip’s son Adam saw the blog and called the high school. (A side note about Adam: I met him when he was 2 years old.)

The incredible result of all this is that Archbishop Stepinac High School is founding the Skip Morton Scholarship Fund, a fund that will enable a young man to attend this great school with generous help from the community. If we raise enough funds, a classroom will be named after Skip Morton himself. I’ve been in touch with the Morton family, and needless to say, we are all very excited. I also requested that Mr. Morton be considered for the Stepinac Hall of Fame.

I’m also asking for you to donate to the fund. I know you have likely never met Skip Morton, but it’s also likely that you have had a teacher or coach that has influenced you in a similar way. Make the donation for that person in Skip’s name, and pay it forward.

You can make checks payable to:

Stepinac HS Foundation
Archbishop Stepinac HS

Please put ”Skip Fund” in your memo portion of your check.

If you choose to send via Venmo, please send to @StepinacEvents. Please indicate your gift is intended for the Skip Morton Scholarship Fund.

If you wish to use a credit card, please visit the Archbishop Stepinac website, click “Giving,” and then “ Make a Donation.” Click the drop box labeled “Designation,” then scroll down and select “Thomas “Skip” Morton Scholarship Fund.”

Too often these awards and recognitions come posthumously. I never quite understood that. In this case, Skip is alive and well. Let’s honor this great man.

Thank you for honoring Skip, and all of the wonderful teachers, coaches, and mentors who made an impact on your life.
